Hello, I am writing to urge you to take action against the gun violence epidemic gripping our country. In 2020, over 43,000 Americans were killed as a result of gun violence. 2021 is set to be even worse, with over 21,000 Americans already dead from gun violence in the first six months of this year. The federal government has to step in. On June 24, 2021, Senator Cory Booker and Representative Steven Horsford introduced the Break the Cycle of Violence Act. This piece of legislation will provide federal grants to communities for evidence-informed community violence intervention and prevention programs designed to interrupt cycles of violence. It will create a National Community Violence Response Center and a federal Office of Community Violence intervention. In addition, this act will create $5 billion in grants to fund programs proven to reduce violence and $1.5 billion in grants to provide opportunities to underserved youth. We, young people of this country, are calling for Congress to address our national crisis. The Break the Cycle of Violence Act will address the many causes that come together to create violence in our communities. Passing this piece of legislation is the most effective way the federal government can protect young people and make America a safe place for everyone.
