Hello, As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to protect our democracy by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will restore the full force of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was gutted by a 2013 Supreme Court ruling and further weakened in July 2021 by the Court's ruling on Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee. Most importantly, the bill will reinstate the federal review process for changes to state and local voting rules that previously protected voters against discriminatory changes. Our democracy promises every citizen the right to vote. But not every citizen is able to exercise that right when voter suppression laws close the polls early, purge voter rolls, and limit voter registration. By passing this bill, we can stop discriminatory policies before they are implemented and make sure everyone, regardless of their background, is able to cast their ballot. As a group disproportionately impacted by voter suppression, we, the young people of this country, are calling for Congress to take action against discriminatory voting laws and protect our right to vote in free and fair elections. Passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is the first step that Congress can take to ensure that young people, along with other disproportionately impacted groups, are able to fully participate in our democracy.
